BUILDING CLEANING SERVICES

Exterior Building Cleaning – UK Experts in Building Cleaning Services

It’s very important to maintain the outside of your building just as you would the inside, but many people neglect this because it’s easy to ignore problems that you stop noticing each day. When was the last time you took a proper look at your roof, or even the walls outside your home, let alone used a building cleaning service?

Unfortunately, if the answer is you haven’t done any of this in a while, you might have a serious problem on your hands. A lack of proper care and attention can have severe consequences when it comes to the overall health and condition of your home’s exterior. Regular cleaning is about more than looks – it can save your building from disastrous problems and huge unplanned repair expenses.

K Rend Render Cladding Cleaning Services Before Facilities Management Cleaning

BLUE SHIELD specialises in safely eliminating the living organisms that slowly grow on the outside of your property, causing all manner of stains, blockages, infestations and other issues. Our proactive building cleaning services are designed not only for visible short-term results, but also long-lasting protection (up to 12 months from a single treatment) from many of the biggest risks to your home.

A word of warning, before we continue: if you think building cleaning is just a case of spraying a pressure washer all over your house, we have some bad news for you. Long story short, you need to stop taking that approach immediately! We’ll explain why, but trust us, it might be one of the worst things you can do to your home.

Why do I need building cleaning services?

The biggest problems and risks to your home

Many of our customers really care about their homes and want to look after them properly, but simply don’t realise how important it is to properly clean and maintain all areas of your home’s exterior. There are several key reasons to do this, and not just for aesthetics! Here are the main problems and risk factors to take into account.

1) Visual appearance

Of course, as we’ve already mentioned, the most obvious reason to take care of the outside of your home is so that it looks attractive, from your own perspective as well as neighbours, visitors and even potential renters or buyers (even if that’s not part of your short term plan!).

If you don’t keep your building clean, it will eventually look run-down due to the growth of moss, algae, black/brown/green stains, leaks and water damage. Don’t be the one homeowner that lets down the look of your whole neighbourhood!

2) Roof damage

Did you know that unwanted debris and stains on your roof can actually be dangerous? Moss is a living organism that often makes a home for itself by latching onto roof tiles and spreading. This can gradually loosen your tiles and cause them to break, but the more serious risk comes from the algae and lichens that moss facilitates. These are more actively destructive to your tiles, causing long-term discolouration and damage.

Eventually, roof damage is the most common cause of water getting into your home where it shouldn’t. This directly leads to leaks, damp and mould which can potentially compromise the structural integrity of your roof and your house. These are some of the most expensive and difficult problems to get rid of in a property once you let them develop due to lack of proper maintenance.

3) Gutter blockages

Moss, other plants and their associated debris can also take root in your gutters. If they aren’t cleaned often enough, gutters provide a safe and moist environment for plants to grow and even collect their own soil. This means the rainwater has nowhere to go, and instead of being transferred to your drainage system (i.e. what gutters are designed for), it collects in the gutter. Fallen leaves are the other common cause of blockages.

This causes several problems, because the weight of the collecting water puts the joints and fixings of your gutters under too much pressure, and this can cause them to break and leak over time. If gutters are sagging, coming away from the wall or causing water to overflow down the sides of your house, they cannot function correctly and only lead to more issues.

4) Slip hazards

Since blockages and overflows lead to water flowing where it shouldn’t (which usually causes stains running down your render, brickwork or tiles), you are at risk from slipping on dangerous patches of water, ice or moss outside your home. This problem is much worse in winter, which is also the time that un-serviced gutters tend to get blocked and exacerbate this risk.

5) Home insurance requirements

You might not be too concerned about the costs of repairs to your gutters, roof or other areas on the outside of your home because you have a home insurance policy. However, the vast majority of providers will state in their terms that they expect you to carry out suitable cleaning and maintenance to keep the risk of damage to a minimum. If you fail to produce evidence that you have taken these preventative measures, they may refuse to pay out in the event of an emergency.

These are just the biggest risks and hazards to consider, but as you can appreciate there are all manner of possible consequences when you don’t look after the outside of your home. The build-up of dirt and debris allows various issues to go unnoticed and get worse the longer they are left.

How NOT to clean the outside of your house

Based on our years of experience in the industry, we can safely say that chemical softwashing (which we use for all our roof cleaning and render cleaning etc.) is significantly preferable to using a power washer or similar aggressive methods. This is not only due to its effectiveness, but perhaps even more importantly because it does not damage your home, unlike a jet of water at very high pressure.

Although you might not think of water as being powerful enough to cause damage to walls and roof tiles, at high pressure it can do exactly that, leading to cracks and weakening the surface. It can also break down protective layers such as UV protection on tiles, which exposes them to further damage from sunlight and exposure to harsh weather conditions over time.

People like to use pressure washers as a cheap cleaning solution because the effects are instant and can look impressive at first glance. However, not only is there a high likelihood of damaging the surface, it probably won’t stay clean for very long either. This is because water does nothing to kill the spores or bacteria that encourage moss, plants and pests to flourish. If anything, blasting them can make it easier for them to spread over a larger area more quickly.

Why BLUE SHIELD’s exterior cleaning solution works best

Our gentle but highly effective chemical cleaning process works by killing unwanted organic material.

The low-strength formulation is specifically designed to be eco-friendly and responsible. It’s just as strong as it needs to be without being corrosive or harmful in any way in the long term. Part of the benefit of using BLUE SHIELD is there is no need to wash off the treatment – it can be left on your walls/roof and offers a reasonable degree of ongoing protection in the following months, so regrowth from the same source is practically impossible.

That being said, you will need top-up coats to keep up the best possible level of protection. Problems like moss can always be reintroduced when there are sources nearby (such as overhanging tree branches that deposit debris directly onto your roof). We recommend repeating the process of moss removal more often than normal if you live in an area with a lot of trees, which helps keep all those related issues under control.

Although softwashing is designed to kill plants, we also ensure your garden is protected do there is no unintentional damage to flowers, trees and plants when you get your building cleaned. In order to do this, we have a simply strategy that works beautifully: all we do is generously water your plants/lawn before we start (with zero need for any other chemicals, fertiliser etc.), which stops them from absorbing more water for a while. When we’re finished cleaning, we wash away the excess solution and ensure everything is hosed down again. This prevents any chemicals from interfering with the growth of your garden plants.
